The Ointment of Knowledge
Guruji, at Your feet I offer to Thee my mind
And my body I do give at Your feet divine . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Endless lifetimes, I've indulged in many sins
And the fire of misery has scorched me from within.
When You glance at me, my Lord, compassion does begin
Then of Your holy feet, the reward I'll win . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Numerous forms I have seen with sharp clarity
Today they are beautiful, tomorrow they're ugly.
Formless One, please show Your form each and every day to me.
This will be the greatest boon to make me happy . . . . . . . . . . .
My ears hear many words but I don't know their meaning;
Trivia clogs my brain, yet my soul's void is lingering.
Grace me to listen to the word of the Supreme
Thus from the wheel of death and birth liberating . . . . . . . .
Above and below, I have searched this world over;
But true love or real peace, I did not discover.
Of the path of love only You are the knower:
Worldly ones are unknowing that You're 'Supreme Lover' . . . . . . .
Externally we see the earth's gross elements,
Yet our hearts remain dark with an unlit filament.
Apply the ointment of knowledge in my eyes, 'Kripalu',
Making the light to shine in them permanent . . . . . . . . . . . .
Viniti Muniji spent many days with Leela in 1983 going over each bhajan with word for word translations and then explaining any grey areas. Later after returning to America Leela crafted these bhajans to fit the meaning and melodies.
