The Importance of Humility
English transliteration on bottom of page

The Importance of Humility

Only those whose necks become as soft as clay,

Bow down their heads to Krishna validly.

Those who are climbing upward each day

They reach love's ladder through humility . . . . . .

When a hypocrite tries to bow down

His mind is set in pride and vanity;

But he who bows down where pride is not found

Courtesy become his fine quality . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Who is there to listen to my words?

I have looked everywhere and can't find Thee.

I'm repeating Your name so I can be heard

Krishna! You'll notice me surely . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Just to put on your forehead a mark

And to hold in your hand a nice rosary,

These gestures do not light in Krishna a spark

Brother, remove your ego promptly . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Those who have just very small amounts

Never should be ashamed of their bounty;

For wisdom is the only virtue that counts

Everywhere worship the Lord only . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Now that "Kripalu" is my guru

No more worldly temptations will thwart me.

Blow my ego clean off as I bow to You

Make the sword of knowledge shine brightly . . . . . . . .

Viniti Muniji spent many days with Leela in 1983 going over each bhajan with word for word translations and then explaining any grey areas. Later after returning to America Leela crafted these bhajans to fit the meaning and melodies.
